Overview
You have a foreign nationality, but have been living in Germany for some time and intend to stay here permanently. For this reason, you wish to naturalize as a German citizen. Through naturalization, you become an equal citizen of our country with all the rights and obligations of a citizen.
From the age of 16, foreign nationals can submit this application themselves. For younger persons, an application must be submitted by their legal representatives.
Note on processing times
Due to the large number of applications already received, the processing time is currently approx. 15 months from receipt of the application. For reasons of equal treatment, processing is generally carried out after receipt of the application. The current legal regulations will continue to lead to a further increase in the number of applications.
The expiry of a passport or residence permit, as well as the commencement of special employment, is not a reason for preferential processing. The desire to travel to other countries is also not a reason for urgent processing. The authority asks for your understanding in this regard.
Once the online application has been submitted, you will receive a confirmation of dispatch from the system, which also serves as confirmation of receipt. If there are any outstanding or supplementary documents during processing, you will be notified accordingly. It is understandable that you would like to be kept informed about the status of your application. However, the large number of inquiries slows down the process and hinders the continuation of work. It is therefore not possible to respond to status requests. We are trying to cope with the high number of incoming applications. Organizational and personnel measures have already been taken to significantly reduce the duration of the process in future.
Our employees are making every effort to process applications as quickly as possible and thank you for your patience and understanding.
You can now submit your application online.
All naturalization requirements must be met in full as part of the application process. The original application documents must be available to you in full and must be uploaded or submitted in full during the application process. If you are not only submitting an application for yourself, but also for your family members, the necessary documents for your family members must of course also be uploaded or submitted in full. Incompletely submitted documents or missing requirements may mean that your application cannot be processed and may have to be rejected.
The online application is preceded by a free quick check to assess whether you are eligible for naturalization.
Please use the online application, as our authority is digitally based.
Please note:
The current version of the Citizenship Act stipulates that your previous citizenship can be retained from the German side. However, it should be noted that each country has its own national citizenship law and does not always permit multiple citizenship. If necessary, contact your diplomatic mission abroad for more information.
Please also note, however, that the new law generally provides for a means of subsistence without claiming benefits under SGB II and SGB XII. If you are currently unable to secure your livelihood without these public benefits, we advise you not to apply for naturalization. If there are special reasons or personal hardship that justify the application, these must be proven by means of corresponding detailed documents.
