Old Ippendorf cemetery

The old cemetery in Ippendorf is located above the Melbtal valley on a slope directly on the road to Poppelsdorf. The municipality of Ippendorf was given a plot of land by the Türck family in 1890. Although the location of the cemetery directly on the road was unfavorable and it would have been better to have a forecourt, the cemetery complex was built on the plot during the carnival days of 1892 on a voluntary basis. A cast-iron central cross was donated for the inauguration. A single grave cost 15 marks, a double one 30 marks.

As the cemetery area soon became too small, there was an extension down to Melbtal in 1931/32.

A small military cemetery with a memorial was built in this part for the fallen and missing of the war. Those who died in and around Ippendorf during the last days of the war were buried here.

The mortuary was built in 1954. Even after the Second World War, the municipality considered an extension necessary. However, the expansion was only implemented in 1957 due to the increase in population following Bonn's election as the federal capital.

However, the cemetery was already too small again in the 1960s. Expansion was no longer possible due to its location in the Melbtal valley, so in 1967 a new plot on the street "Im Acker" was chosen for a new cemetery. In 1988, so much water seeped into the slope, which consisted of a sand-clay mixture, that it slipped into the Melbbach. 26 graves had to be reburied. Since then, an elastic wall, known as the Krainerwand, drainage and appropriate planting have secured the slope.
