Throughout Germany, the trend of more and more fathers claiming parental allowance continues unabated. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 410,000 fathers across the country received parental allowance in 2017. The number rose by a good 11% compared to 2016.
In Bonn, 51.8 percent of fathers took two months of parental leave in 2017, making Bonn one of the cities where a particularly large number of fathers take parental leave. The average duration of parental leave for all fathers in Bonn was even higher, at 5.2 months!
Current study results from the RWI-Leibnitz Institute for Economic Research in Essen show positive consequences for family life when fathers also take parental leave.
Fathers who have taken parental leave spend more time with their children even years later. Even if the period of time taken was only short. The effects on the division of housework between the parents are also long-lasting.
Fathers have their own need for information and their own desire for exchange.
In Bonn, the Caritas Association offers an opportunity to talk to other fathers about their own situation. There is also a counseling service for fathers.
