This is a press release from Stadtwerke Bonn
The roadway will be marked at a later date and traffic will then be diverted past the works. "I am delighted that we were able to complete this construction site even faster than planned. My thanks go to the employees for this," says Urs Reitis, Managing Director of the municipal utility subsidiary BonnNetz.
The district heating network in the federal city has grown by one kilometer thanks to the expansion in Duisdorf. It currently covers around 125 kilometers. In the future, the capacity in the Bonn city area will double, as district heating is an optimal solution for achieving the climate protection targets for the heating transition.
Further major projects to follow
"The expansion of the district heating network in Bonn and other municipalities in Germany will lead to more construction sites on roads and sidewalks, which will cause temporary restrictions. We are therefore providing early information about planned measures - via letters, our own media channels and media coverage. We want to take everyone with us on the road to climate neutrality," says Urs Reitis.
Among other things, the vocational college of the Rhein-Sieg district has been connected to the environmentally friendly energy supply via the new route. BonnNetz has expanded the district heating network by a total of five megawatts of thermal output. Energy-efficient plastic-sheathed pipes with a high standard of insulation and automatic leakage monitoring were laid for this purpose.
The next major project will be the Am Neuen Lindenhof area at Sportpark Nord. Work is due to start there in the spring. In Weststadt, the Westside commercial and residential area will be connected; preparatory measures are already underway. There will be a coordination meeting with the developer of the construction area this year.
District heating is sustainable
Since the 1950s, SWB Energie und Wasser has been supplying the city with sustainable district heating, which is generated by highly efficient combined heat and power generation in the northern combined heat and power plant (HKW). Stadtwerke has launched the District Heating 2035 program to help the city of Bonn achieve climate neutrality. The aim is to establish district heating as a key technology for the heating transition and to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Thanks to the new gas and steam turbine, the CHP plant will not only be able to supply more electricity from 2024, but also more district heating. Bonn's district heating is set to become even more climate-friendly thanks to the use of CO2-neutral hydrogen and will gradually replace natural gas as a fuel at the CHP plant from 2025.
