Beuel dedicates the square in front of the town hall to its "Möhnen"

The square in front of Beuel town hall is now called "Möhneplatz". This means that the members of Beuel's ladies' committees, the so-called "Möhne", will be included in the street directory in the anniversary year "200 years of Weiberfastnacht in Beuel". Mayor Katja Dörner and District Mayor Guido Pfeiffer unveiled the new street sign at the square's inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, in the presence of Obermöhn Ina Harder and Wäscherprinzessin Sabrina I.

The naming of the central square refers to the unique tradition of the Beuel carnival in Germany with the Rathaussturm on Weiberfastnacht. Every year, the Obermöhn and the Wäscherprinzessin lead the storming of Beuel's town hall together for the carnival takeover - cheered on by the Möhnen from Beuel's ladies' committees and numerous onlookers. The decision to change the name was made by the main committee of the city of Bonn on the recommendation of the Beuel district council in December 2023.

"Just in time for the big Rathaussturm in the anniversary year of Beuel's Weiberfastnacht, the Möhne will be given an appropriate place in the heart of Beuel," said Mayor Katja Dörner, who is also the patron of the anniversary. "Möhne play an important role in Beuel. The 17 ladies' committees, from whose ranks a Wäscherprinzessin is proclaimed every session, shape the Beuel carnival and make it something very special."

In his welcoming address, district mayor Guido Pfeiffer recalled the history of Weiberfastnacht in Beuel, which began 200 years ago with the Wäscherinnen: "Over time, more and more women joined the Wäscherinnen to celebrate their own carnival without the men who had traveled to Cologne. The married women were called Möhne - as mothers, grandmothers, sisters or aunts, they took care of the children, grandparents and the house in addition to their work. Despite or perhaps because of their hard everyday lives, they were the driving force behind the Beuel carnival and so their name became the name of the celebrating women in Beuel."

Wäscherprinzessin Sabrina I was also delighted with the naming of the square: "The jecke women's power of the Beuele Wieve has now been given visibility for the whole year with the 'Möhneplatz'. I am delighted that the term 'Möhne' will be preserved for future generations."

Part of the Beuel Rhine embankment is named after Erna Neubauer

In spring 2024, a second street will be named with a carnival reference: following a decision by the Bonn City Council, the southern section of Rheindamm between Arnoldstraße and Kaiser-Konrad-Straße in Beuel will be named after Erna Neubauer. As Obermöhn, Erna Neubauer was committed to Beuel's customs for decades and helped to shape, promote and popularize key elements of Weiberfastnacht in Beuel, such as the proclamation of the Wäscherprinzessin and the Rathaussturm. She died in December 2022.

200th anniversary of Weiberfastnacht in Beuel

Weiberfastnacht in Bonn's Beuel district celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2024. The anniversary is not only a carnival celebration, but also one of emancipation: the Beuel washerwomen defended themselves against male dominance and the associated exploitation of women. Both themes are reflected in the anniversary program, which was launched on the eve of 11.11.2023 and extends far beyond the end of the session.
