Editorial Newsletter Bonn International May

Dear Friend of Bonn,
Here comes the second issue of our International Newsletter in 2019. It’s spring in Bonn! And spring in our city is all about sustainability: Bonn’s SDG Days will again feature a plethora of activities and events that everybody can join in on. And a couple of weeks ago, Bonn’s City Council adopted the city’s first comprehensive Sustainability Strategy, transferring the SDGs to practically all areas of life in Bonn.

Our upcoming major conferences in Bonn will also deal with topical issues around sustainability and place a special focus on climate change, on the resilience of our cities and on the use of our landscapes.

In the European election year, we are reporting on how the idea of European community is brought to life here in Bonn. Apart from our annual related activities and events that always draw a large crowd, the City of Bonn, together with the Regional Representation of the European Commission, has launched a large outdoor advertising campaign, addressing and encouraging in particular young people to go and vote. And the Bonn topic of sustainability is a field that also extends to the European level: Mayor Sridharan has just signed an open letter to the European Council and its Member States, along with more than 200 other European local leaders. Together, they raise their voices and call for a more sustainable and equitable European future and for the fast implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement.

In this issue we will provide you with information on further international conferences, activities and events in Bonn this spring: The participants of this year’s DW Global Media Forum will explore the work, significance and networking of the media in our age and in particular against the backdrop of shifting powers around the globe.

70 years ago, Germany’s Basic Law, which serves as the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany to this day, was negotiated and adopted here in Bonn. In the anniversary year, we will celebrate a Democracy Festival in our city center this coming weekend. Another anniversary is coming up at the beginning of June: the tenth anniversary of our fruitful project partnership with the City of Chengdu in the People’s Republic of China. We warmly invite you to read more about these events and have a closer look at what else is on in Bonn. And we are happy to publish a guest article in this edition: Taylor Robb-McCord, Communications and Marketing and Specialist at the NDC Partnership Support Unit in Bonn, explains how the NDC Partnership is supporting countries in reaching the climate goals and thereby accelerates climate action around the world.

Finally: Bonn’s official website has been relaunched! The new design is more than a fresh coat of paint. And we will continue expanding our online offers and services for all friends of Bonn.
