How Mildred Scheel and German Cancer Aid made history

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, German Cancer Aid, together with the Haus der Geschichte Foundation and the City of Bonn, invites you to a reading and panel discussion on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

In September 1974, Dr. Mildred Scheel, doctor and wife of the then German President Walter Scheel, founded the German Cancer Aid. Her aim was not only to talk openly about cancer as a widespread disease and support those affected, but also to promote prevention and research on a large scale.

To mark its 50th anniversary, German Cancer Aid, together with the Haus der Geschichte and the City of Bonn, is organizing a panel discussion and reading under the motto "Focus on people - 50 years of German Cancer Aid". The event on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 7:30 pm (admission from 7 pm), at Haus der Geschichte Bonn, Willy-Brandt-Allee 14, is free of charge.

Dr. Heike Specht, author of the anniversary book "Im Mittelpunkt der Mensch" (Piper Verlag), Gerd Nettekoven, Chairman of the Board of Deutsche Krebshilfe, Prof. Dr. Carsten Bokemeyer, Director of the Hubertus Wald Tumor Center at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf and spokesperson for the German Cancer Aid's Network of Oncological Centers of Excellence, and Prof. Dr. Heribert Jürgens, paediatric oncologist from Münster, will look back on 50 years of German Cancer Aid in a panel discussion. The actress Mariele Millowitsch will read excerpts from the book. The event will be moderated by journalist and author Jörg Thadeusz. The Mayor of Bonn, Katja Dörner, will give a welcoming address at the beginning.
