On until July: Public Lecture Series ‘International Civil Protection and Disaster Risk Reduction’
Worldwide, people are threatened by the consequences of climate change such as floods, droughts and storms. This applies in particular to people in the world‘s poorest countries, in coastal areas or in mountain regions. But also across Europe and in Germany, natural events with destructive effects such as storms, heavy rains, floods and landslides have led to high losses in recent decades, and the trend is rising.
Against this background, the Department of Geography of the University of Bonn and the City of Bonn, jointly with numerous resident organizations, have launched a public lecture series entitled “International Civil Protection and Disaster Risk Reduction”, providing some insight into the practical work of the United Nations, federal ministries and authorities, businesses, academia and NGOs in Bonn and in the region.
The lectures for the summer term 2019 will either be held in German or in English respectively and will again be taking place at alternating venues until July.

Bonn and Chengdu celebrated the tenth anniversary of their fruitful partnership
Chengdu, capital city of the Sichuan Province, has become an important business hub in China. With its roughly 15 million inhabitants, it is Bonn’s largest partner city. The cities of Chengdu and Bonn have maintained friendly ties since the year 2,000. These have involved close cultural contacts and mutual visits. In 2009, the partnership treaty was signed.
In 2013, both cities signed a climate partnership agreement under the title ‘Bonn-Chengdu Partnership for Sustainable Low-Carbon Development’. The partnership also involves a close cultural exchange and a variety of other mutual encounters.
The tenth anniversary of the partnership was celebrated on Bonn’s Market Square on 1 June. In a varied program, highlights from the province of Sichuan were presented. The public could experience traditional mask changes, the classical tea ceremony and Chinese dances. There were also two singing-along programmes for children and adults as well as performances of the Bonn band "Kochkraft durch KMA", very successful in Chengdu, and Markus Schinkel Trio in the evening.
Visitors could learn about Chinese culture at 9 different market stalls, experience new culinary delights with chefs from Chengdu or see Chinese artisans at work.

Personalities from the fields of international affairs, business and science are committed to Bonn as an international and business location with their honorary office. Mayor Sridharan appointed three new Business Ambassadors at a network meeting in the Old Town Hall on 26 March.
"Together we have achieved a lot for Bonn in the past two years," said Mayor Ashok Sridharan in his welcoming address to Bonn’s International Ambassadors and Business Ambassadors. He gave the guests a review of developments in the international arena: starting with the successful COP 23 World Climate Conference in autumn 2017, which enhanced Bonn’s international reputation as a conference venue and hub for sustainability, to the expansion and further development of Bonn’s UN family, to the strengthening of the international presence with the participation of the Mayor in numerous conferences in the field of sustainable development.
The Mayor also drew a successful balance in the economic and scientific fields. With the founding of the Bonn Cyber Security Cluster last October, the topic of cyber security in Bonn was strengthened: "Bonn is to be further developed into a nationally and internationally respected and recognized cyber security location," said the Mayor. He also emphasized the importance of science for the location. "The University of Bonn, the universities in the region, science and research organizations as well as federal institutions and organizations of research management and research promotion - all these are formative institutions, important employers, places of education and research and important players in various networks," emphasized Sridharan.
The new ambassadors are managing directors of renowned companies and have good national and international networks. They have long been actively involved in promoting Bonn as a business location at home and abroad.
A total of 35 ambassadors are now promoting Bonn as an international and business location.
