The Brexit came into force on 01.02.2020. The United Kingdom has thus left the EU in an orderly manner.

For British citizens and their family members, nothing will change this year in terms of residence law.

The exit agreement provides a transitional period until 31.12.2020, during which the United Kingdom will continue to be treated as an EU Member State and the EU's rules on freedom of movement will continue to apply to British citizens.

During this transitional period, the legal status of British citizens will be defined more precisely under federal law. In any case, British citizens will in future require a residence permit or other proof of their right of residence for their stay in Germany.

Therefore, the City of Bonn offers British citizens and their family members the opportunity to register online.

By registering, an application for a residence permit is submitted within the deadline if you meet the following requirements:

  • you are a British citizen or live with a British family member (spouse; minor child) and
  • you are registered with your main residence in Bonn

If so, your stay in Germany after 31.12.2020 will continue to be legal with your registration until a final decision on your application is made.

If you are a citizen of another EU member state or of Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway in addition to your British citizenship, a registration is not required.

If you are not resident in Bonn, please contact the responsible local Immigration Office.

After you have completed the online form, you will receive an overview of the information you have provided, which will also serve as proof of your registration. You will find the online form under "Forms and Links".

The registration is free of charge. However, fees may still be payable at a later date, when an application for a residence permit is processed.

No (renewed) online registration is required for persons who have already registered before 01.02.2020.

Provided you have registered, the Immigration Office will contact you at the beginning of 2021. You do not need to take any further action. You are requested to refrain from making inquiries about the current status of your application until then.

Please continue to inform yourself about the current developments of the Brexit issue. The Immigration Office will also keep you informed of any changes relevant to residence law on this website.
