A firm component in the international calendar of the city of Bonn is the Carnival reception "BonnExpat Alaaf" in the Old Town Hall. Due to the pandemic, the popular event started at the end of January for the first time not in presence, but as a digital Carnival Quiz, bringing together the international friends of Carnival not only in Bonn, but on five continents.
"BonnExpat Alaaf" is aimed at the international staff of the United Nations, international organizations and non-governmental organizations, scientific institutions and global businesses. Since 2017, the so-called expatriates have even been participating with their own Carnival society, founded by the staff of the United Nations in Bonn, the UN Funken, proclaiming an international Carnival majesty every year.
The first "BonnExpat Alaaf Carnival Quiz" was attended by Mayor Katja Dörner, the President of the Bonn Carnival Festival Committee, Marlies Stockhorst, and many other Carnival guests. For a good 90 minutes, everything revolved around the traditions and peculiarities of Carnival in Bonn. And the guests from the ranks of Carnival provided details and the anecdotes for each correct answer. "What are actually the insignia of Prince Carnival? And which Carnival tradition was born in Bonn?" These were just two of the eleven fun questions that had to be answered in the quiz.
Mayor Dörner emphasized: "I am looking forward to working together with the representatives of the Bonn Carnival to bring a small piece of our beautiful customs onto the screens and into the hearts of our quiz guests. Because a little bit of lightness and the idea of togetherness in Carnival helps us all to better get through these difficult times".
The digital Carnival Quiz was organized by the Department of International Affairs and Global Sustainability of the City of Bonn with support from the partners of the "BonnExpat" event series as well as from the ranks of Carnival with advice, action, celebrity guests and video contributions.
Carnival in Bonn
The centuries-old tradition is celebrated in Bonn and in the Rhineland with Carnival sessions, large concerts, beautiful street parades and colorful costumes. It seems that the entire Rhineland tumbles into a state of complete craziness. Prince Carnival and his Bonna take over the reign in the city – so do Carnival highnesses in several city districts.
Due to the pandemic, new virtual event formats had to be found to keep up social distancing during this most cheerful time of the year. And the people in Bonn and in the Rhineland were very creative: online Carnival sessions and streamed concerts, drive-in events and much more was on offer! The Carnival royalties that have been proclaimed this year will continue their reign during the coming Carnival season in 2022. For the UN Funken, this will be UNiversa Audrey I from Australia.
BonnExpat event series
The "BonnExpat" series brings together Bonn’s growing international community. Employees of the United Nations, non-governmental organizations and large international corporations get to know each other and the many sides of their professional home of Bonn once a quarter. The "BonnExpat" evenings are hosted by the Foundation for International Dialogue of the Sparkasse in Bonn, Deutsche Post DHL and the City of Bonn. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, all events of the series have not taken place since March 2020.
