Sustainable Urban Development: The Urban October at GIZ

It's almost that time of the year again: the start of the Urban October 2022 is close! Launched by UN-HABITAT in 2014, each year the Urban October aims to raise awareness on global urban challenges and the importance of sustainable urban development. With 28 exciting events the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) joins the event month with its own.

Cities are our future – already more than half the world's population lives in cities. By 2050, over 90 percent of the global population growth will take place in cities and the global building stock is expected to double - even quadruple in some countries. The role of cities as the main habitat of future generations stresses the importance of building cities that are sustainable and classifies urbanisation as one of the most important dynamics of our time. Whether it’s the quality of air and water, well-established public transport, access to health care, green and recreational spaces for people to unwind and children to play – the way a city is built is crucial for human life. Therefore, the resilience of our cities, urban infrastructure and local institutions are of paramount importance now, and will even more so be in the future.

During the Urban October 2022, you can expect a mix of events on relevant cross-cutting urban issues that will be addressed in various formats and discussed with special guests. To check out the GIZ programme 2022, follow the link below!
