The City of La Paz also celebrates Beethoven's 250th birthday

On the occasion of Ludwig van Beethoven's 250th birthday, a newly renovated Beethoven memorial stone was inaugurated on Monday, September 28, 2020, in Bonn's partner city of La Paz in Bolivia. The Mayor of La Paz, Luis Revilla Herero, and the German Ambassador in La Paz, Stefan Duppel, both were present at the inauguration ceremony. Mayor Ashok Sridharan sent his greetings to the partner city via video message, thus building a bridge between the anniversary celebrations in Bonn and La Paz.

"In these uncertain times, culture - music, literature - can be a sign of hope. Beethoven in particular has expressed in his music the unifying power across all nations. I am therefore very pleased that Bonn's most famous son is also honored in our partner city," said Mayor Ashok Sridharan in his video message.

The renovation was coordinated by the Flavio Machicada Viscarra Foundation, which has dedicated itself for many years to the cultivation and dissemination of classical music in La Paz. The foundation had already initiated the erection of the memorial stone in honor of Bonn's most famous son 50 years ago.

After its renovation, the memorial stone now shines in new splendor. As a new element, the opening lines of the Ode to Joy, Beethoven's most famous piece, have been engraved on the back of the stone. The renovation was financially supported by the German Embassy in La Paz. The City of Bonn sent a small Beethoven package to all those involved.

Even though public life in La Paz is severely restricted by COVID-19 and the associated curfews, Bonn’s partner city has put together an extensive program for the Beethoven anniversary. Most of it is taking place online, and many concerts can be watched at home. The dedication of the monument on El Monticulo Square in La Paz was one of the few public events.

Due to the precarious situation in La Paz, the Bonn-La Paz partnership association is planning an appeal for donations. Further information can be found on the website of the association at:
