Mayor Dörner receives the UN special representative for disaster reduction

Mayor Katja Dörner received the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, Mami Mizutori, on Friday, October 28, 2022. During her visit, Mizutori presented the Mayor with a certificate of Bonn's accession to Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative and signed the city's guest book.

Mami Mizutori presented the Mayor with a certificate of Bonn's joining the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative.

Mami Mizutori heads the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), which maintains an office in Bonn in addition to its headquarters in Geneva. Since 2010, UNDRR has been working with cities and their networks under the umbrella of "Making Cities Resilient" to make cities more resilient to the climate crisis and its consequences. Bonn joined as one of the first cities in 2010. In 2020 - during the Daring Cities conference co-hosted by Bonn and ICLEI - UNDRR launched the next phase of collaboration with cities, the Making Cities Resilient 2030 initiative. Bonn has also been an official member here since October 2022. UNDRR Director Mizutori presented the membership certificate in person during her visit to Bonn.

Mayor Katja Dörner: "The climate crisis and its consequences are now being felt all over the world - for example in floods and droughts in South Africa, New Delhi, Nigeria and Pakistan, but also here in the region, as in the devastating floods in the Ahrahl and on the Erft last year. Cities around the world - including Bonn - are taking precautions to protect lives and infrastructure. It's especially important that we as cities work closely together on this and learn from each other."

During their visit, Mizutori and Dörner also discussed the city of Bonn's planned application to become a resilience hub of the MCR2030 initiative. In partnership with the Cities Network for Sustainability ICLEI and the Bonn Network for International Disaster Response and Risk Management, the city of Bonn plans to initiate and implement numerous activities on resilience and disaster risk reduction over an action period of three years. These include workshops and exchange rounds within the framework of international conferences such as Daring Cities, as well as a joint webinar series with ICLEI and, in particular, the further networking of actors and networks. A decision on Bonn's application to become a resilience hub is expected in the first half of 2023.

Bonn is not only home to an office of UNDRR, but also to many other organizations and institutions involved in disaster risk reduction and risk management. In 2017, on the initiative of the City of Bonn, the Bonn Network for International Disaster Risk Reduction and Risk Management was founded to bring these actors together.
