Disaster Risk Reduction for Sustainable Development

The upcoming Bonn Symposium 2022 will place a special focus on shaping sustainable development through strategic disaster risk management. The Symposium will be held at the Gustav-Stresemann-Institut (GIS) in Bonn from 7 to 8 December 2022. Registration is still open.

For local communities across the world, disaster risks are dramatically increasing as a result of climate change and other hazards. Extreme weather events are occurring more frequently, as for example in Pakistan in 2022 or in Germany in 2021. In light of this, comprehensive disaster risk reduction (DRR) and efficient crisis management are essential for sustainable development.

Cities and municipalities have a special responsibility in disaster preparedness and crisis management. At the same time, there are numerous starting points at the local level for actively shaping sustainable development through strategic disaster risk management. Experts from local authorities, politics, academia and civil society will be discussing these opportunities at the Bonn Symposium 2022. Representatives of the member organizations of the Bonn based Network International Civil Protection and Disaster Risk Reduction will also present their findings. There will be ample possibilities for participants to partake actively through interactive discussion methods. The City of Bonn is supporting the Bonn Symposium with an evening program including a reception at the Museum of Art, where Mayor Katja Dörner will welcome the conference guests.

The conference is planned as an in-person event. For international participants, a live stream in English will be made available. If you are interested in attending, please send a short email to  nordmannsef-bonnorg

The Bonn Symposium Series

The Bonn Symposium was launched in 2013. In the ten years of its existence, it has developed into a recognized platform for exchange on the importance and implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the local and regional level.[SV(1]  The event is organised by the Development and Peace Foundation (sef:) in cooperation with the Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW), a division of Engagement Global gGmbH. The Symposium benefits from funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The City of Bonn and other partners regularly support the conference, which is firmly established in the city’s international conference calendar.
