City of Bonn celebrates International Women's Day

International Women's Day is celebrated every year on March 8. The Equal Opportunities Unit of the City of Bonn has organized a diverse program in the City Hall together with numerous partners. On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, starting at 10 a.m., around 30 actors who work for women's rights and more justice in our society and in our city will inform about their work.

Under the motto "Exchange, inform and celebrate together", the Equal Opportunities Unit of the City of Bonn wants to send a strong signal on International Women's Day on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. March 8 is an important day to draw attention to what has already been achieved in the realization of gender equality - and what, unfortunately, has not yet been accomplished. This year, the City of Bonn and partners will once again offer a range of face-to-face events, supplemented by digital ones, which are primarily intended for people with conflicting demands.

"Without the potentials and talents of women and without equal rights, there can be no social progress. The realities of women's and men's lives often still differ too much," states Mayor Katja Dörner. Women continue to face greater challenges when it comes to balancing work and family life, she explains. "This is particularly evident in times of crisis. For me, equality is only achieved when it is irrelevant in all areas of life what gender you are."

Women’s Rights organizations present their work in the City Hall

The Equal Opportunities Unit of the City of Bonn, together with many partners, invites you to get to know the valuable work of about 30 associations, counseling centers and organizations that work for women's rights and more justice in our society and in the city. In the lobby of the City Hall as well as on the second floor in front of the City Council Chamber, these organizations will provide information at their stands. Mayor Katja Dörner will welcome all participants of the Bonn Women's Day at 12 o'clock in the lobby of the City Hall and then take a tour of the stands to get more information.

English-language event to mark International Women's Day

An English-language event is also part of the program for International Women's Day. The Gender@International Bonn network, with its new member, the Gender Group of the Center for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn, invites to an online discussion. It will highlight the situation and contributions of women in times of crisis, environmental change and violent conflict. Mayor Katja Dörner will open the event at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2023. The panel will be international. Among others, the deputy head of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and a representative of the city of Kharkov (Ukraine) will join the discussion.
