"With their expertise and tireless commitment, midwives make a significant contribution to strengthening families in Bonn. The midwife outpatient clinic is particularly important for Bonn because the service is aimed at women and families who previously had no access to midwife care - be it due to the general shortage of midwives, cultural differences or in crisis situations. This closes an important gap in Bonn's midwifery services," said the Mayor.
At the meeting of the Obstetric Round Table in March 2022, organized by the office of the Municipal Health Conference of the City of Bonn, it was confirmed that the supply bottlenecks in Bonn had increased. The midwifery center stated that a third of all requests could not be met. The establishment of a midwife outpatient clinic was recommended as a solution by the obstetrics working group that was set up as a result.
With the adoption of the budget, the city council has allocated a total of 90,000 euros for 2023 and 2024 to support the establishment of a midwife outpatient clinic in the city. In the tendering process, the non-profit association "Hebammen Ambulanz Bonn" was selected as a suitable provider.
Ten freelance midwives currently offer their services on the premises of the former St. Johannes Hospital in Kölnstraße. They provide advice and treatment for complaints during pregnancy and care for mothers in the postpartum period and during breastfeeding. The premises have excellent transport links and barrier-free access. With opening hours six days a week and during off-peak hours, the facility provides low-threshold access to midwifery care.
