Around 902,000 Corona vaccinations in Bonn in just under two years

The Federal City of Bonn has drawn a thoroughly positive balance after almost two years of Corona vaccinations. Between February 8, 2021 and the end of 2022, a total of 299,670 first vaccinations, 290,763 second vaccinations, 248,049 third vaccinations and 63,684 fourth vaccinations were administered in Bonn by physicians in private practice, hospitals, pharmacies and the city administration (in cooperation with the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians North Rhine).

"With these numbers, we are in a good position," Health Director Margarete Heidler is convinced. "Our thanks go to all those involved who contributed to the success of the vaccination campaign in Bonn."

The bottom line is that the total number of all Corona vaccinations at the end of 2022 is around 902,000. Of these, just under 289,000 vaccinations have been carried out under the direction of the city administration at the vaccination center, at mobile vaccination campaigns and at the vaccination centers in the four city districts alone - in other words, almost a third of all vaccinations.

Start with the vaccination center in the WorldCCBonn

By the end of 2020, the city had established its large vaccination center at the World Conference Center. At this early stage, the vaccination center's coordinating office organized, among other things, vaccine deliveries for all of Bonn's clinics and hospitals and vaccinations for people in senior facilities by mobile teams. Due to the vaccine shortage, it took until February 8, 2021, before the first people could be vaccinated at the vaccination center. By the last day on September 2, 2021, more than 200,000 vaccinations (about 106,000 first vaccinations and about 94,000 second vaccinations) had taken place at the vaccination center, with up to 1800 vaccinations per day during peak periods.

Mobile vaccinations

As early as July 10, 2021, mobile vaccinations were available to citizens*, organized through the health department, even outside the WorldCCBonn. These were successively expanded from September 1, 2021. In cooperation with the Stadtwerke Bonn, a converted bus was used for the Corona vaccinations at events in Bonn (e.g.: Kunstrasen, BonnFest, Katastrophenschutztag) for vaccinations. A second bus also made it possible to reach Bonn schools to offer the vaccinations approved from August 2021 for children aged twelve and older.

Vaccination centers in the city districts

In parallel, the city administration opened vaccination centers in the Stadthaus from October 11, 2021, in the Bad Godesberg Stadthalle from December 15, 2021, in the Hardtberg Rathaus from December 1, 2021, and in the Brotfabrik in Beuel from January 11, 2022. The Bad Godesberg Stadthalle mainly vaccinated children from the age of five.

The wide range of vaccination options and the large number of vaccines made it possible to achieve a high number of booster vaccinations (third vaccination), so that as of March 2022 the demand was already very much covered. After the closure of the stationary vaccination centers in Beuel, Bad Godesberg and in Hardtberg, however, the health department organized temporary mobile vaccination campaigns in the city districts, e.g.: on the occasion of the Poppelsdorf street festival. Targeted vaccination campaigns for hard-to-reach groups (homeless, addicts) were also offered in cooperation with charitable organizations and were well received.

Last increase in demand due to adapted vaccines

There was a further increase in vaccinations in June 2022, when the second booster vaccination (fourth vaccination) was administered to a large part of the population. Likewise, the vaccine adapted to the omicron variant BA4/5 led to increased demand in September and October 2022. From the beginning of November 2022 until the closure of the vaccination office in the town hall on December 21, 2022, the response was very low.

Vaccinations still available in doctors' offices

Although the Town Hall has not offered Corona vaccinations since Christmas 2022, opportunities to be vaccinated against Corona continue to be available at physicians' offices in private practice. Information about Corona is still available on the city's website at www.bonn.de/coronavirus.
