Mayor Katja Dörner has announced that the City of Bonn is ready to receive refugees from Ukraine.
"The city of Bonn shows solidarity with the people in Ukraine and strongly condemns the attack in violation of international law and the war for which Putin is responsible," said the mayor. "It is important that we in Bonn stand together across party lines for democracy, the rule of law and freedom in a strong Europe. Our solidarity must also be felt in practice. In close coordination with the federal and state governments, we are preparing to provide shelter and protection to people who have to flee Ukraine. We welcome the fleeing people from Ukraine and want to offer them safe shelter after the terrible experiences of the outbreak of war and the escape."
How is the city preparing?
The Office for Social Affairs and Housing is examining all potential options for housing people. Accommodations must be created predominantly in addition to the existing stock, since the capacities for accommodating people with and without a refugee background in Bonn are largely exhausted. The first places are already available in the existing accommodations. Numerous other properties are currently being checked for availability, condition and usability.
How will the allocation be made?
According to the notifications of the EU Commission, the city of Bonn assumes that special regulations for the refugees from Ukraine will come into force soon. These regulations are intended to circumvent long asylum procedures. Whether an allocation - as is usual in the asylum procedure - must take place is currently still unclear.
Where can I call if I have accommodations?
Appropriate offers of accommodation for refugees can be reported to the Office of Social Affairs and Housing using this form.
In coordination with all involved departments of the City of Bonn, the Office for Social Affairs and Housing coordinates the accommodation of assigned or otherwise arriving refugees in Bonn.
Can Ukrainian nationals be evacuated?
Currently, there is no possibility to have close family members with Ukrainian citizenship evacuated by German authorities.
What requirements do people need to come to Bonn from Ukraine?
Ukrainian citizens can enter Germany without a visa for visits of up to 90 days. The only requirement is the possession of a biometric passport.
The Foreigners' Office will take care of Ukrainian citizens in such a way that they do not have to return even if the visa-free visit period expires. Those who can change from the visa-free visit period to a residence permit for permanent residence (e.g. taking up employment, family reunification) no longer have to go through the procedure via the German Embassy in Kiev, but can do so directly at the Foreigners' Office.
How many Ukrainians are currently living in Bonn?
Currently, 850 Ukrainian nationals live in Bonn. As of December 31, 2021, 1,203 persons with an immigration background are recorded in Bonn's population statistics. This figure includes both Ukrainian nationals and German nationals with an immigration background from Ukraine.
