Mask obligation in the city center remains - firecracker prohibition on New Year

The obligation to wear masks in the city center of Bonn will remain in place even after the Christmas market has been dismantled on the evening of December 23, 2021. In addition, it is prohibited to carry or set off fireworks in certain places in Bonn on New Year's Eve. Both regulations are set out in a new general decree issued by the city, which will apply from Thursday, December 23, 2021.

The mask requirement in downtown Bonn, which the city introduced at the start of the Christmas market, will remain in place when it ends on the evening of December 23, 2021. The city assumes that, especially after the holidays, it will not be possible everywhere in the pedestrian zone to maintain the recommended minimum distance of 1.5 meters from other people. Therefore, in order to protect oneself and others from the coronavirus, a medical mask or FFP2 mask must continue to be worn there. From a medical point of view, the obligation to wear a mask is a simple but highly effective protective measure to reduce the risk of infection. It should therefore be worn as a matter of principle where many people congregate in a confined space.

There is one change compared to the previously applicable regulation: Until Thursday, December 23, the mask obligation on the streets and squares where the Christmas market takes place applies on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and thus one hour longer than in the rest of the city center. From Christmas Eve, December 24, the obligation applies in the entire pedestrian zone on weekdays between 10 am and 8 pm. The signage will be adapted accordingly.

The mask requirement applies in the following areas:
