Ukrainian refugees: Three gymnasiums reopened

Three of the five gymnasiums that have been used since mid-March for the temporary accommodation of refugees from Ukraine have been reopened by the Federal City of Bonn. As a result, the two gymnasiums at the Michaelschule in Bad Godesberg and the gym on Schieffelingsweg in Duisdorf will - after appropriate cleanup work - be available to schools and clubs again in the course of the week between May 2 and 6, 2022.

"I am pleased that three gymnasiums can be used again in the coming days," says Mayor Katja Dörner. "The accommodation of refugees in sports halls is and should only be an emergency solution. We had announced that we would successively vacate the gymnasiums as soon as other accommodation options became available. This is therefore a consistent step. My thanks go to the schools and clubs affected for their understanding over the past weeks." The two gymnasiums on Kölnstraße (Ludwig-Erhard-Berufskolleg and Robert-Wetzlar-Berufskolleg) are expected to be used until the end of May 2022 to provide meals for refugees, among other things.

3,400 refugees reported from Ukraine

Meanwhile, since February 24, 2022, a total of 3,400 refugees from Ukraine have registered in Bonn at the Citizens' Services Service Center (as of April 27, 2022). Compared to the previous week, this is an increase of 197 people.

As of April 28, 2022, the city administration has accommodated a total of 1,929 refugees from Ukraine: 205 in municipal accommodation, 67 in apartments, 896 in hotels, and 761 people were placed in private accommodation.

The Foreigners' Registration Office has now received 1,500 applications for residence permits for temporary protection. Each so-called fiction certificate issued for this purpose contains the passage that any gainful employment is permitted. How many people have actually taken up work in the meantime is not known to the city administration, since the specific employment does not have to be approved.

The Office of Social Affairs and Housing has recorded about 1,500 cases for benefits in the meantime. Benefits have already been paid to 871 communities in need (households). In addition, the Social Welfare Office has issued 1,152 health cards and 349 sickness certificates.

Kindertagesstätten und Schulen

The city's family office has so far received 115 applications for childcare in municipal daycare centers and facilities run by independent providers. Of these, the Family Office has already been able to place 47 in kindergartens.

In addition, more than 520 Ukrainian schoolchildren have been registered at Bonn's schools, with an upward trend): about 200 children at elementary schools, about 260 children/adolescents at the lower secondary level, and another 60 adolescents at the upper secondary level of secondary schools.
