Bonn has managed to shape a new profile for itself as the German City of the United Nations and a centre of international dialogue on key issues of the future. The Bonn UN Campus is a visible symbol of this development.

Since July 1996 Bonn can call itself United Nations City. Ten years later, in July 2006, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel was able to hand over the new United Nations headquarters in Bonn to the then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The Federal Government had invested 55 million euros in the conversion of the former high-rise building of the German parliament, also known as the "Langer Eugen". Almost all Bonn-based UN organizations are assembled under its roof.

In October 2012, another complex of buildings was handed over to the United Nations in the form of the old parliament building, in which the employees of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat are working now. In order to meet the growing space requirements of the United Nations in Bonn, a further building is currently under construction on the UN Campus.

Today, the UN Campus in Bonn offers the United Nations ideal working conditions and a synergetic environment with many national contacts and a variety of internationally active local partners.

The "Tall Eugene" – temporary building with subsequent use

The building was to have a provisional character and later also be usable for other purposes - this was the explicit mandate that architect Egon Eiermann had to fulfil in 1965 during the planning of the New Parliament Building in Bonn. In the case of the move to Berlin, the building was to be offered to international organizations as a seat, the presidium of the German Federal Parliament proposed at that time.

In 2006, seven years after the members of the parliament left the „Langer Eugen“, a landmark of Bonn's parliamentarianism, in 1999, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan inaugurated the listed building as the heart of Bonn’s new UN Campus.

Modern style in a historical ambiance

The furniture of the offices in "Langer Eugen" is strictly based on the original furnishings, up to the veneer of the built-in wardrobes and shelves. Even though walls were removed in many rooms to create space for several workplaces, the style was retained: 40,000 square meters of French walnut were used to rebuild cupboards and doors, 10 kilometers of shelves and 14 kilometers of skirting boards were replaced.

Following the renovation of the "Tall Eugene", 410 offices, four conference rooms, 36 meeting rooms and a large library are now available. The costs of the renovation, which lasted from 2002 to March 2006, amounted to 55 million euros.

New are, for example, mobile flood protection walls, which can be fastened within three hours approximately around the building in the foundation, as well as meter-thick flood protection plates under the house against water ingress from below. Interpreter booths for up to seven languages in the large meeting rooms, two video conference rooms and glass fire protection walls were also added. For UN employees there is an Internet café as well as a room for prayer or meditation.

The UN organizations use the buildings on the UN Campus free of charge, but pay for the operating costs. Thanks to the energy-efficient renovation of the buildings, however, these are significantly lower than in the days of the German capital.
