Within the framework of funding projects with partners from science and practice, the City of Bonn is working on the basics of climate adaptation in the field of heat. It participates in the development of concrete planning instruments and accompanies the development of a new urban climate model. The basic principles include a high-resolution climate analysis and climate scenarios and planning reference maps as a basis for consideration in urban landuse planning. As a result of a project with the German Weather Service and the NRW State Office for the Environment, Nature and Consumer Protection, a planning instrument for simulating the effects of climate adaptation measures in different building structures will be available in future - also for other NRW municipalities.

The City of Bonn has undertaken numerous projects to adapt the infrastructure to climate change in terms of heavy rainfall and flood prevention. Since the first extreme event of the recent past in 2010, a whole package of measures for climate adaptation of the city has been initiated in addition to participation in research projects (e.g. together with the DIFU), starting with the establishment of a warning system in case of stream floods, extensive structural measures up to advice for citizens and optimisation of operational processes. Even in new construction areas and even in existing settlement areas, heavy rain resilience now plays a major role.

In the area of mobility, the City of Bonn is promoting the switch to bicycles and has set itself the goal of significantly increasing the proportion of bicycle rides from the current 15 percent in the future.

The expansion of the infrastructure will make cycling more attractive and increase the proportion of bicycle rides. In addition to opening one-way streets for bicycle traffic, setting up protective strips and continuously expanding bicycle parking facilities in the city districts and at public transport stops, more than 50 bicycle lanes have been set up to date. The main cycle routes have been equipped with a junction signpost which can be used by the state's cycle route planner to plan trips. In 2018, the new cycle station at the main station was opened, offering 24-hour service with automatic access. Since autumn 2018 there has been a bicycle rental system. Currently, the city is planning to develop cycle paths into fast cycle routes and to set up mobile stations in the city centre.

The city of Bonn is also focusing on electromobility: in recent years, the city's vehicle fleet has begun to gradually switch to electric drives. The municipal subsidiary Stadtwerke Bonn operates electric filling stations in the city area and uses electric buses in local public transport. The complete conversion to electric buses is scheduled for 2030.

By the way, the city of Bonn has one of the densest public transport networks in Germany compared to other cities of its size. Stadtwerke Bonn offers four different means of transport: light rail, tram, buses and a bicycle rental system. The local public transport network is continuously being adapted to the increasing demand and the timetable is becoming more and more dense.

The regional railway network is also constantly being expanded. Several new stops have been added in recent years, such as the „Bonn UN Campus“ stop. On the right side of the Rhine, additional tracks are currently being built for the extension of S-Bahn line 13 from Troisdorf via Beuel to Bonn-Oberkassel. The City of Bonn is committed to further expansion of the lines and electrification of the S 23.

The City of Bonn is also committed to climate protection at international level in relevant city networks such as the Climate Alliance and, above all, ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability). In the umbrella organizations of German cities (Association of German Cities and Towns) and European cities (Council of European Municipalities and Regions, Eurocities), climate action and climate adaptation are frequently on the agenda.

Under the heading Municipal Climate Partnerships, the City of Bonn - supported by Engagement Global - works directly with the cities of La Paz (Bolivia), Cape Coast (Ghana) and Linares (Chile). Topics are strategies and measures for climate adaptation, the use of renewable energies and education for sustainable development. In Chengdu (China) an exchange on climate-related issues was carried out together with civil society organizations.

In the context of municipal annual partnerships, climate change time and again has also been at the center of attention, such as with the partner organization Germanwatch e.V. or with Engagement Global. The close networking among Bonn’s actors ensures a particularly good anchorage of the climate as a cross-cutting issue in all kinds of projects and events - whether in a multi-year EU project on the European Year for Development, for instance, or in a series of lectures and events on climate justice at the Adult Education Center in Bonn.

Citizens can get first-hand information on climate-related topics at the annual Bonn Energy and E-Mobility Days. Also on United Nations Day in autumn, important climate stakeholders are represented every year. Moreover, everyone is invited to take action throughout the year, by participating in the annual city biking campaign of the Climate Alliance in Bonn or by promoting climate protection in one’s private environment, for instance. By the way, even the smallest ones can render a contribution: 7.000 children in Bonn have been awarded the „BONNi & BO“ climate license in the city's primary schools to date and are now on the road as „Bonn’s Climate Ambassadors”.
