German UNESCO Commission e.V.

The German UNESCO Commission (DUK) is Germany’s liaison organisation for multilateral cooperation in the fields of education, science, culture and communication and, at the same time, it constitutes a national commission according to Art. VII of UNESCO’s Constitution. It is tasked with advising the Federal Government and Parliament and relevant institutions on all questions arising from the Federal Republic’s UNESCO membership. Within the framework of Germany’s UNESCO policy, DUK renders a contribution towards international understanding and cooperation. It coordinates the support rendered by German experts and German civil society for developing UNESCO’s programs and norms. Being a liaison organization for foreign policy in the fields of culture and education, it is funded by the Foreign Office. The 197 UNESCO national commissions form a network within the system of the UN which is one-of-a-kind worldwide. This network is tasked with supporting national governments as far as their individual contribution towards UNESCO is concerned and with integrating national expertise into intergovernmental cooperation.
