German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW)

The German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) is the organization for civil protection and disaster relief of the Federal Republic of Germany. Since 1953, THW has also carried out missions abroad. Missions include rescuing persons, salvaging goods, decontaminating and distributing drinking water, providing electricity, repairing buildings and housing refugees. Further optional missions include transports and bridge construction as well as other forms of manual work and technical advice.
Occasionally THW cooperates with NGOs on site. All missions abroad are carried out on behalf of the Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the European Union or United Nations organisms.
