Global Festival of Action
The Global Festival of Action for Sustainable Development, organized by the United Nations Campaign Office for Sustainable Development (UN SDG Action Campaign), is taking place for the fourth time in Bonn. The three-day conference is aimed at actors from all over the world who are committed to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Global Festival of Action offers an interactive framework for the presentation and exchange of new approaches, methods and developments for the implementation of the SDGs. Target groups include representatives of national governments, municipalities, international organizations, the creative industries, the private sector and civil society. About 1,500 participants are expected to attend.
The City of Bonn will be represented at the conference with an information stand and the "SDG wheel of fortune".
Bonn Climate Change Conference
The annual meeting of the Subsidiary Bodies to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is expected to attract some 3,000 delegates to Bonn again in 2020. The meeting serves to prepare the 26th Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention, which is to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in November 2020. The City of Bonn, together with the Federal Environment Ministry, is traditionally hosting a reception for the delegates to the Bonn preparatory conference. In addition, the City of Bonn supports the Climate Secretariat in public relations and logistical matters.
ICLEI Daring Cities 2020
The Bonn Global Forum builds on the 10 years of experience gained at the ICLEI Resilient Cities Conference and repositions it in terms of content. The aim is to embed the topic of resilience more strongly in the overall context of climate protection and adaptation and to take account of current developments at the municipal level (including resolutions on climate emergency and climate neutrality). Furthermore, cooperative measures involving various levels of government are to be highlighted and the connections to related topics (e.g. climate financing) and sectors (e.g. science) are to be more strongly emphasized and linked more closely with the organizations based in Bonn (UN, science).
The conference is organized by the city network ICLEI with the support of the City of Bonn. Amongst other measures, the City of Bonn supports the conference through public relations activities, the offer of specialist excursions and networking events for conference participants.
Global Landscapes Forum
On 3-5 June, GLF will host one of the world’s first global digital conferences on integrated land use from its new digital broadcasting center in Bonn, Germany, marking a new era for global conversation without a carbon footprint. Experience the future of conferences and connect, share, learn and act through this three-day GLF event featuring inspirational talks, interactive sessions and idea exchange toward building more sustainable food systems.
The 2020 theme of GLF is „Food and Livelihoods.”
The Global Landscapes Forum has been held in Bonn each year since 2017. In 2019, around 600 representatives from all over the world took part in the international forum on issues of sustainable land use. A further 14,000 interested people followed the conference via live stream.
6 to 7 July: Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum
The 13th edition of the Global Media Forum was dedicated to the opportunities and challenges of digitization. Due to the corona pandemic, journalists and media professionals as well as multipliers from politics and civil society, culture and education, business and science from 120 countries met virtually on 6 and 7 July. The title of this year's edition was "Pluralism. Populism. Journalism".
24 to 28 August: UNSSC Summer Academy
The Summer Academy of the United Nations System Staff College is an integral part of the international conference calendar of the City of Bonn. In 2020, it took place for the fifth time in Bonn.
5 to 11 October: 5th International Conference on Chemicals Management - ICCM5
In 2002, the World Summit on Sustainable Development agreed on the 2020 chemical target to minimize the negative effects of chemicals on environment and health by that date. To implement this 2020 goal, the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) was founded in 2006.
The Strategic Approach provides the framework for cooperation between all relevant stakeholders and sectors on overarching issues of international chemical safety. The decision-making body is the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM). The mandate of the Strategic Approach ends in 2020 and an intersessional process is to develop recommendations for shaping the Strategic Approach and international chemicals and waste management after 2020.
Decisions will be taken by the 5th International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5) from 5 to 9 October 2020 under German chairmanship in Bonn.
The United Nations is the organizer of this conference. The Federal Government (BMU) will support the conference in terms of content, protocol, technical and organizational matters. ICCM5 is expected to be attended by 1,500 representatives from all groups of actors and sectors relevant to SAICM and will discuss the future chemicals policy in plenary sessions and working groups. A ministerial segment in the form of a conference is also planned.
The City of Bonn supports the Federal Government by arranging room allotments for conference participants through Tourismus & Congress GmbH, as well as in the area of public relations work and by holding a reception as part of the ministerial segment.
5 to 6 November: Bonn Symposium of sef
Hosted by the Center for International Security and Governance, University of Bonn and the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies, Johns Hopkins University. Uniting numerous international senior experts in Bonn. A special focus was placed on cyber security and AI.The Bonn Symposium of the Development and Peace Foundation offers a platform for international exchange on the implementation of Agenda 2030 for sustainable development at the local level. Since 2014, it has been held in cooperation with the Service Agency Communities in One World/Engagement Global. Each year, the Symposium focuses on a particular aspect of local implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The City of Bonn is participating in the conference with a reception for the participants, amongst other activities.
24 to 26 November: Civil Security Innovation Forum
Within the framework of the German EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2020, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is planning a combined event of the European Commission ("Security Research Event" - SRE2020) and the BMBF (Innovation Forum Civil Security 2020). The event, which is expected to attract around 1,200 participants, will take place at the WCCB from 24 November to 26 November 2020. It is being organized in equal parts by the BMBF and the European Commission. The target groups are all relevant actors from the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, from industry, the user community, authorities and organizations with security responsibilities and political decision-makers from Germany and across Europe.
Conference Highlights 2019
17 to 18 June 2019: Bonn Climate Change Conference
The annual meeting of the subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was expected to bring some 3,000 delegates to Bonn in 2019. The conference served to prepare the 25th Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention in Chile (COP25). Mayor Ashok Sridharan, also in his role as President of the international network of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, spoke at various agenda items of the conference. In cooperation with ICLEI, there were a thematic forum addressing the effects of climate change in cities as predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
24 to 27 October 2019: IPC General Assembly
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019 and the 20th anniversary of its establishment in Bonn. On this occasion, the IPC General Assembly and Board Meeting took place in Bonn from 24 to 27 October 2019 with around 400 participants from all over the world, including high-ranking representatives of the IPC member associations and the associated international federations.
The General Assembly of the IPC takes place every two years and has the function of a general meeting.
