Bukhara

Bukhara is capital of the Uzbek Province of Bukhara. The university town is located on the Silk Road, has roughly 235,000 citizens and is well-known for its old part of town, whose famous monuments were declared World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1993.

First contacts between the cities of Bonn and Bukhara were established during a conference on cities and desertification in 1999. The traditional caravan city is threatened by progressive desertification – and Bonn is home to the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

Sustainable Tourism

A focus of the partnership is on the project Sustainable Bukhara, promoting the sustainable operation of hotels and restaurants. Training is available for both hotel and administrative staff, and new technical solutions are on offer for the project partners.

Youth Exchange

Long-standing cooperation exists between the secondary school Emilie-Heyermann-Realschule in Bonn and a twin school in Bukhara that offers German tuition. In the framework of the EU-funded SPICE project, students have become involved in the protection of our climate, designing educational material, publishing flyers, organizing exhibitions, thus becoming climate ambassadors.

Cultural Exchange

The partnership is supported by the German-Uzbek Society (Deutsch-Usbekische Gesellschaft), which promotes exchange and mutual encounters among citizens and organizes exhibitions and thematic evening events.
