The official signing of the Basic Law took place in Bonn on May 23, 1949.

Bonn is the cradle of the Basic Law and thus of the most stable democracy on German soil. This should be celebrated!

The Office of the Federal President, the German Bundestag, the Bundesrat, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federal City of Bonn, together with the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland and many partner organizations, invite you to the Democracy Festival  on Saturday, 25 May 2024, from 11 a.m.


Event program

On this day, a colorful program for the whole family awaits you in the park of Villa Hammerschmidt, in the park of Palais Schaumburg, in the Bundesrat, in the World Conference Center Bonn and on the United Nations Square in the former federal district:

  • Open day at Villa Hammerschmidt, the official residence of the Federal President in Bonn.
  • The German Bundestag gives guests the unique opportunity to take a seat in the former plenary chamber, now part of the World Conference Center Bonn.
  • Open day at the Bundesrat, the place where the Basic Law was promulgated, Bonn branch office.
  • Open day at the Federal Ministry for  Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with a tour of the former Federal Chancellery (Cabinet Room, Chancellor's Office) and the Chancellor's Bungalow.
  • A wide range of hands-on activities and presentations by more than 50 partner organizations on all aspects of the Basic Law throughout the event site.
  • Talk, cabaret and music program on three stages with guests from politics and society.
  • Closing concert from 7 p.m. on the stage in the park of Villa Hammerschmidt.

Guided tours on the path of democracy

Guided tours on the "Path of Democracy" in the former federal district. (Free outdoor tours, every half hour between 12 noon and 6 p.m., duration approx. one hour, maximum 20 people per group). Registration on the day of the event at the stand of the Federal City of Bonn on United Nations Square.
