Healthcare management

Bonn is a strong location for the health care industry with an excellent medical care structure, a large number of health-oriented research and scientific institutions and the headquarters of important authorities, foundations and associations in the health care sector. In addition, renowned companies from the fields of telemedicine, imaging systems, consulting and occupational health and safety are represented in Bonn.

High level of medical care

Medical care in Bonn is at a high level, both inpatient and outpatient: In the inpatient sector, around 20 hospitals, clinics and specialist outpatient clinics contribute to this, including Bonn University Hospital with its 38 clinics. In the outpatient sector, more than 1,000 physicians in private practice, psychotherapeutic practices, physiotherapists and other therapists are active in patient care.

Around 100 pharmacies and companies in the healthcare trade ensure that the population is supplied with medicines and medical products close to home.

Top research

The broad spectrum of medical and pharmaceutical research in Bonn is supported by both university and non-university research. The main focus is on neuromedicine, medicine of aging, life sciences and pharmacology.

Health as an economic factor

As an employment-intensive industry of the future, the healthcare sector is also an economic factor: In Bonn, for example, there were around 35,100 employees subject to social insurance contributions in the healthcare and social services sector in mid-2022. The core area of healthcare alone (inpatient and outpatient care, therapeutic practices, specialist retail and healthcare trades) accounted for almost 24,390 employees, which corresponds to around 13 percent of all employees subject to social insurance contributions in Bonn.

Public health authorities and associations

Major ministries, authorities, foundations and associations in the health care sector have their headquarters in Bonn. Their areas of activity are extremely diverse, ranging from the government policy tasks of the federal ministries and the charitable work of the foundations to the political and professional representation of specific sectors, professional and patient groups by the associations based in Bonn.

Networking

With its networking activities in the area of health care management, the Bonn Economic Development Agency pursues, among other things, the goal of increasing transparency about the local and regional offerings of the health care industry, identifying current topics and taking them up in appropriate formats.

In addition to the close cooperation with the health department of the city of Bonn, the Rhine-Sieg district and the district of Ahrweiler, the participation of the Bonn Economic Development Agency in the Cologne-Bonn Health Region Association should be mentioned in particular.

Together with other regional authorities, the city of Bonn is a founding member of the association, which has been in existence since 2009 and has more than 140 companies and institutions in the healthcare sector as members. Its purpose is to promote and network science, research, business, care and other areas in the medicine and health cluster in the Cologne/Bonn region.

The Cologne-Bonn Health Region Association now comprises a total of ten regional authorities, eight of which are in North Rhine-Westphalia and two in Rhineland-Palatinate. The city of Bonn is represented on the association's board of directors by the head of economic development, Victoria Appelbe, on a rotating basis during the 2021 to 2024 election period and represents the municipal members here.

Topics and projects

Information security in hospitals

The threat posed to hospitals and clinics by cybercrime has increased in recent years and is likely to become even more serious. Legal requirements demand that IT systems and data be demonstrably protected in accordance with the current state of the art.

At the same time, securing the necessary human and technical resources for implementing information security is often a major challenge, and with regard to the complexity in the area of cyber security, a systematic approach is essential. Products, solutions and services must be coordinated and meaningfully interlocked in the course of a systematic approach.

The Cologne Bonn Health Region Association is currently establishing an Information Security in Hospitals (NIK) network for the region's hospitals and clinics in cooperation with the Cyber Security Cluster Bonn Association, the City of Bonn's Economic Development Department, the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and other partners.

Usable, transferable solutions are to be developed jointly and concrete implementation plans defined. The cooperation of the hospitals and clinics creates and uses synergies and supports the hospitals in achieving an appropriate level of security.

Reconciliation of work and care

A nursing case in the family presents special challenges for family members and employers. Especially when the need for care arises suddenly and unprepared. In addition to their work, employees then have to deal with numerous questions and organizational aspects relating to the need for care and its organization. This is often associated with enormous burdens, which can also have an impact on work and performance and must be taken into account with regard to company measures to secure skilled labor.

The NRW state program "Compatibility of Work and Care" supports companies in improving the compatibility of work and care for their employees with care responsibilities and at the same time securing their continued employment in the company.

Among other things, the program offers the opportunity to qualify employees as company care guides and to gain access to the company care kit with constantly updated information.

A regional launch event for the state program was held in cooperation with the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Center of Excellence for Women and Careers, the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Alliance for Skilled Workers and the Bonn Economic Development Agency on May 23, 2023 in Bonn.

Interested companies can obtain detailed information on the state program and the opportunities for participating in the state program at  www.berufundpflege-nrw.de (opens in a new tab).
