Bonn is a location of important and globally operating business enterprises. This is shown, for example, by the analysis of the market capitalization of those stock corporations listed in the DAX indices (DAX 30, MDAX, TecDAX) that have their headquarters in Bonn. According to the most recent survey in May 2019, the combined market capitalization of DAX companies Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Post DHL Group was around EUR 106.5 billion (as of May 16, 2019). In terms of stock market value, the German city thus ranked third, as in the previous year. This was the result of the "Börsenliga 2019" study by strategy consultants Simon-Kucher & Partners, which has been conducting such a ranking since 2005. Unchallenged at the top is Munich with 13 companies and a stock market value of 296.5 billion euros. The city of Bonn has been able to maintain a stable position in the top 3 in Simon-Kucher & Partners' stock market league for many years, and also as number 1 in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Deutsche Telekom is one of the world's leading integrated telecommunications companies with 242 million mobile customers, 27 million fixed-network lines and 22 million broadband customers. Deutsche Telekom is represented in more than 50 countries and employed 226,300 people worldwide at the end of 2020. In 2020, the Group generated total revenue of EUR 101.0 billion. Strategically, the Group is evolving from a traditional telephone company into a completely new type of service company. According to the Group, its core business, i.e., the provision and sale of networks and lines, will remain the basis for this. At the same time, however, the company is aggressively pursuing business areas with new growth opportunities. One example is the booming Internet applications, such as downloading movies from the Internet, watching soccer matches on a cell phone, sending photos or videos on a smartphone, and sharing them with friends via social networks. In the process, ever greater volumes of data have to be transported at ever greater speeds. This is why Deutsche Telekom is investing more and more in the expansion of fast networks; in total, this amounted to more than EUR 5.5 billion per year in Germany in 2020.
