The Federal Employment Agency registered a total of 179,903 employees subject to social security contributions in Bonn on June 30, 2020. Compared to June 2019, employment numbers have slightly decreased by -0.3% or by 625 in absolute terms. During the same period, employment in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia remained unchanged (0.0%) and the Rhein-Sieg district surrounding Bonn recorded slight employment growth of 0.4%. Compared to the year of the Bonn/Berlin relocation decision in 1991, when there were 134,199 employees subject to social security contributions, their number has increased significantly by 45,704 (+34.1%) due to the long-term positive growth trend in Bonn.

According to the available estimates of the working group "Erwerbstätigenrechnung des Bundes und der Länder," the number of people in employment in Bonn in 2019 is 254,900 (previous year: 251,800, up 3,100). In addition to employees subject to social insurance, the employment calculation also includes civil servants, self-employed persons, family workers and marginally employed persons. Compared to 1991, the number of employed persons in Bonn increased by 66,600 or 35.4 percent, whereas in North Rhine-Westphalia as a whole, the number of employed persons increased by only 19.5 percent.

Services nearly unchanged

The number of employees subject to social security contributions in the service sector in Bonn has remained almost unchanged between 2019 and 2020, with a decrease of 97 employees or -0.1%. In mid-2020, 166,645 employees will be working in the service sector in Bonn; this corresponds to a share of 92.6% of all employees. This makes Bonn, similar to Frankfurt/Main or Potsdam, one of the largest service locations nationwide. On average in NRW, a total of 73.1% of all employees worked in the tertiary sector in mid-2020. NRW's industrial sector accounted for approximately 26.4% of all employees. Compared to the previous year, the number of employees in the manufacturing sector in NRW decreased by -1.1%. In Bonn, the number of employees in the production sector decreased significantly by -4.0% (-546 in absolute terms). The share of the manufacturing sector is still 7.3% in Bonn in mid-2020.

Highly qualified employees

The Federal Employment Agency uses the characteristic "academic degree" to record the degrees "Bachelor, Diplom, Magister, Master, Staatsexamen, Promotion". As of June 30, 2020, the city of Bonn has 32.0% of all employees with an academic degree. That is 57,613 employees in absolute terms (previous year: 55,537), with more women (29,211 employees) than men (28,402 employees) now registered with an academic degree. The NRW average is 16.2%, the national average is 17.4% and in the Rhein-Sieg district 14.0%. A regional comparison with the more than 400 German cities and districts shows that Bonn ranks seventh (previous year: seventh) and only Munich with 37.1%, Erlangen with 36.0%, Jena with 34.3%, Munich (district) with 34.0%, Darmstadt with 34.0% and Stuttgart with 33.6% can boast even higher figures. From the perspective of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the cities of Düsseldorf (27.1%), Cologne (26.5%) and Münster (23.7%) - in addition to Bonn with the highest shares - also have comparatively high shares for this indicator, which is important for the future in an innovative knowledge society.
