Development of economic sectors

The classification of economic activities (WZ 2008) distinguishes 21 economic sections, which are often further summarized for analysis purposes. For example, the "Public and private services (excluding public administration)" sector has the largest number of employees subject to social insurance contributions in the city of Bonn, 61,128, which corresponds to a share of 34.0%. This figure does not include employees in public administration, who are reported separately: With 11.6% of all employees subject to social security contributions, this sector remains highly relevant in Bonn and comprises 20,815 employees. Freelance, scientific and technical services account for 11.3% of all employees, or 20,397 persons. With 19 346 employees, more than one in ten (10.8%) work in the information and communication sector. In total, these four sectors alone account for more than two-thirds of all employees (121,686 in absolute terms) in Bonn.

Information and communications sector continues to grow

Between 2019 and 2020, the information and communications sector grew significantly in percentage terms by +2.6% and in absolute terms by 497 employees - as in previous years. In addition, the sectors of public and private service providers (excluding public administration) grew the most in percentage terms with 2.4% and public administration with 2.3%. In absolute terms, the public and private service providers sector (excluding public administration) achieved the largest gains in employment, with +1,449 employees. Particular mention should be made here of the healthcare and social services sectors, which - as in the previous year - provided a major boost to employment. The largest losses, both in percentage and absolute terms, were recorded by financial and insurance services, with minus 1,505 employees or a decline of -20.0%. Significant losses of -7.9% were also recorded by the hotel and restaurant industry (-557 employees) and other economic services, with a negative change of -7.0% and -749 employees, respectively. Notable losses are also seen in the manufacturing sector (-5.9% or -548 employees).

Employment in Bonn relatively stable between 2019/20

In summary, it should be noted that the developments in the individual sectors with their respective gains and losses between 2019 and 2020 resulted in a very slight decline in employment of -0.3% or -625 employees in Bonn. In the state of NRW, the development was also very stable. There, with a bottom-line change of 0.0%, there were neither losses nor gains in employment subject to social security contributions.

The structural changes of recent years show that employment growth in Bonn has been initiated in particular by the service sector and that this is where the greatest growth impulses or new jobs can be seen. Therefore, the share of the service sector in all employees has systematically increased in recent years to now 92.6%. In contrast, the manufacturing industry as a whole has lost importance in the economic structure, although this is less due to the absolute change in employment figures (these fluctuate roughly between 13,000 and 14,000 employees) than to the strong dynamic growth in employment in selected branches of the service sector.
