Dear Sir or Madam,

The results in the Annual Economic Report 2021 show that Bonn as a business location has great stability overall. In addition to the difficulties in sectors particularly affected by the Corona pandemic, a modernization push in digitalization can also be observed in many economic and social fields.

The current stable situation in Bonn is based on the successful transformation of the city of Bonn and the region into an internationally oriented location. Bonn continues to have a prominent function as a second federal political center and is the German location of the United Nations. Bonn is also considered a center for international cooperation and a competence center for science and for sustainable development. The economic structure is characterized by global players and medium-sized service companies; innovative manufacturing companies and an active start-up scene enrich the location. Further areas of expertise lie in the fields of cyber security, information technologies and, last but not least, Bonn has a strong cultural location.

The Bonn Economic Development Office was again active last year with many measures to support the competitiveness of the location. Bonn will continue to be a growth location in the future, which is why I believe we need particularly high quality standards for structural change, for example in commercial land reserves or the organization of transport.

Four strategic priority topics for the further development of our city have been defined: (1) "Climate-neutral Bonn," (2) "Traffic and mobility turnaround," (3) "Socially just Bonn," and (4) "Digital transformation." In all four areas, actors from business, science and social groups play a key role.

I look forward to cooperating with you.

Preface Victoria Appelbe, Director of Economic Development

Victoria Appelbe, Wirtschaftsförderin

Dear Sir or Madam,

The Annual Economic Report 2021 of the City of Bonn describes the economic development comprehensively and takes stock of the activities of the Economic Development Office. I would like to name a few highlights by way of example:

The federal government was successful in its Bonn bid to host the new EU branch of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts based near London. This clearly shows that Bonn can score points with its scientific excellence throughout the region, its excellent location, its infrastructure and its good welcoming culture as well as its high quality of life.

As part of the new innovation award "Rheinland Genial" of the Metropolregion Rheinland e.V., the city of Bonn together with the IHK Bonn/Rhein-Sieg awarded four innovative Bonn companies with a great response.

In addition to entrepreneurial innovation, the focus of the Economic Development Office was on the development of our city centers, which have been particularly challenged by the Corona pandemic. The Economic Development Office organized the first Bonn City Conference "Commerce is Change." With state funding, a center management program for Bad Godesberg, Beuel and Duisdorf has begun its work. Numerous projects also progressed under the Smart City Bonn program, including the elementary broadband expansion in our city.

The team at our Business Service Center, as the first point of contact regarding business start-ups, company development or relocation, handled a total of 1,063 concerns and projects in 2020, almost exclusively by telephone and in digital form. Similarly, all of the business development offices have "digitally reinvented" themselves.

The Bonn Economic Office team would like to thank all partners and customers for the good cooperation and will be happy to assist you at any time.

Please do not hesitate to contact us!
