2,450 establishments in Bonn
With its small and medium-sized enterprise structure, the skilled craft sector represents an important sector of the local economy. At the end of 2019, the craft groups "Construction" with 572, "Health and Personal Hygiene" with 546 and "Electrical/Metal" with 500 companies were the most strongly represented in the federal city. There are a total of 2,446 registered firms in Bonn which, according to estimates by the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg District Craftsmen's Association, provide an average of six jobs per firm (converted into full-time employees). Accordingly, it can be assumed that a total of around 15,000 employees subject to social insurance contributions or 17,000 gainfully employed persons - including entrepreneurs and family members - are employed. These generate an annual turnover of around 1.6 billion euros. The contribution of the skilled trades to the training of young people is worthy of special mention. In Bonn alone, some 1,238 apprentices are undergoing training in the broad spectrum of craft trades occupations; the number of training companies was 450 in 2019.
Recruitment of young people
The skilled craft trade sector is intensively recruiting new talent. In February 2020, for example, the Cologne Chamber of Skilled Crafts and Small Businesses in cooperation with the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) held a trainee speed dating event for skilled crafts and IHK professions in the Bad Godesberg town hall. Under the motto "Trainee Champions", around 450 young people met with over 120 regional companies to make their training clear. The 23rd Training Exchange planned for March 2020, an event organized by the Bonn/Rhein-Sieg Employment Agency, the Bonn/Rhein-Sieg Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the District Craftsmen's Association, was cancelled due to the Corona pandemic.
Bonn Energy Agency
The Bonner Energie Agentur (BEA) was founded in 2010 and became an association in 2012. The 22 members of the association include the guilds of the building and finishing trades, the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg District Craftsmen's Association and the Cologne Chamber of Skilled Crafts. The BEA offers interested parties a neutral and independent contact point for information on all aspects of energy-efficient renovation and construction as well as the use of renewable energies for private property owners. For example, the "Bau- und Sanierungstreff" lecture series offers a broad range of expert knowledge on a variety of topics.
On June 19, 2020, the "Joint Initiative for the Promotion of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses" was launched between the City of Bonn and the Cologne Chamber of Skilled Crafts. With this agreement, the concerns of small and medium-sized enterprises are to be given special attention by the City of Bonn and good framework conditions created. The agreement on small and medium-sized enterprises defines five major thematic areas: Working and Training market policy, transport policy, climate protection and energy policy, Economic promotion and urban development as well as digital service offers (Smart City Bonn). Topics such as the compatibility of family and career and the acquisition of University graduates for the skilled craft trades are also addressed in it, as well as for for example, e-mobility in the crafts sector, awarding of contracts or the promotion of Innovation and technology transfer.
