According to the data currently available for the year 2018, a total of 159,712 persons were employed in the city of Bonn in 15,439 enterprises subject to social insurance contributions (excluding agriculture and public administration). As Information- und Technik Nordrhein-Westfalen (IT.NRW) as the statistical state office of North Rhine-Westphalia determines on the basis of an evaluation of the NRW company register, this was 4,211 employees more in Bonn than in 2017 (+2.7%, NRW: +2.2%) and 26,426 persons more than in 2008 (+19.8%, NRW: +19.3%).
99.4% small and medium-sized enterprises
IT.NRW's classification of company size classes differentiates between the classes 0-9, 10-49, 50-249 and 250 or more employees. Overall, companies with fewer than 250 employees account for 99.4% of all companies in Bonn and 88,756 people (or a proportion of 55.6%) are employed subject to social insurance contributions in these 15,339 companies. All of the other 100 large firms (previous year: 95) with 250 or more employees employ 70,956 persons (or 44.4% on a pro rata basis) who are subject to social insurance contributions. An examination of Bonn's company structures reveals a differentiated situation: Micro-enterprises with up to 9 employees account for 87.3% of all companies and these account for 12.3% of all employees. The group of small firms with 10-49 employees accounts for 18.4% of employees and 9.5% of the firms. Medium-sized firms with 50-249 employees account for 24.9% of employees and 2.6% of the firms. Among the large companies with 250 or more employees, the share of employment in Bonn (44.4%) is very clearly above the figure for NRW as a whole (33.7%). However, a comparison with selected cities in the Rhineland shows that the same number of employees, or in some cases significantly more, are registered in large companies: For example, the employment share in companies with more than 250 employees, similar to Bonn, is 43.7% in the NRW state capital Düsseldorf and 45.0% in the neighbouring city of Cologne. Leverkusen even has a share of 50.3% in this indicator, meaning that more than one in two employees there work for a large company.
