Applying for a residence title

Citizens of non-EU countries need a residence title (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) for stays exceeding 3 months if not exempted by a special agreement. The application is dealt with at the Immigration Office Bonn (Ausländeramt).

Foreigners generally require a residence title based on the purpose of their stay.

There are the following types of residence titles:

  • Visa
  • Residence permit
  • EU Blue Card
  • ICT Car
  • Mobile ICT Card
  • Permanent settlement permit
  • EU long-term residence 

All residence titles are issued in credit card format as an "electronic residence title" (eAT). These are not produced at the Immigration Office Bonn, but at the Federal Printing Office in Berlin. The procedure takes about 6-8 weeks.
