The ‘cornerstone‘ for Bonn’s development as Germany’s United Nations city was laid on 20 June 1996, exactly five years after the Federal Parliament had passed the Bonn-Berlin Act. In the presence of former Federal Minister of the Environment Angela Merkel and UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the blue UN flag was hoisted for the first time at ‘Haus Carstanjen’. The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) and the Climate Secretariat (UNFCCC) had just relocated to the banks of the river Rhine in Bonn. Today, the UN in Bonn counts 18 organizations with roughly 1,000 staff. Also, more than 150 national and international non-governmental organizations are based here.
