UNU Vice Rectorate in Europe (UNU-ViE)

The Vice Rectorate in Europe was established in Bonn in May 2007. It is the only Vice Rectorate outside UNU headquarters in Japan and strengthens the presence of UNU in Europe. It supports the worldwide institutional growth of UNU, particularly in Europe and Africa. It thereby employs a new concept known as "twinning”: All UNU Institutes should have a location in both a developed and a developing country. In this way a balanced geographical distribution as well as real mutual knowledge transfer through the "rotation” of scientists and students can be achieved. For instance, UNU-ViE currently is working on the establishment of a Twin Institute in Mozambique.

Furthermore, UNU-ViE is engaged in the fields of international dialogue for sustainability research and e-learning. In addition, it coordinates the UNU-wide initiative "Priority Africa”. Its aim is to design UNU activities in Africa more efficiently by advancing knowledge transfer and cooperation of pre-existing projects and partnerships as well as pooling resources.
