2019 Conference Highlights


 

The City of Bonn will also be the venue for important international conferences in 2019. For example, the international city network ICLEI is organizing its tenth "Resilient Cities" conference with several hundred participants from all over the world in the city. The UN SDG Action Campaign invites to the third "Global Festival of Action". And on the occasion of its 30th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of its establishment in Bonn, the International Paralympic Committee is hosting its General Assembly on the Rhine this year.

2 to 4 May: Global Festival of Action

For the third time, the United Nations UN SDG Action Campaign office, based in Bonn since the end of 2016, is holding an international conference on the implementation of these development goals (Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs). The three-day "Global Festival of Action" brings together representatives of national governments, municipalities, international organizations, the creative industries, the private sector and civil society in Bonn. They will exchange views on innovative and inclusive approaches, methods and developments for implementing the SDGs. The City of Bonn will participate in the Global Festival of Action with public events.

As part of the festival programme, the annual networking meeting of the signatory municipalities of the Agenda-2030 Declaration of the German Association of Cities is also held in Bonn. The Association of German Cities and Towns, the Service Agency Communities in One World/Engagement Global and the City of Bonn jointly invite you to this event.

27 to 28 May: Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum

The 12th Global Media Forum organized by Deutsche Welle will take place from 27 to 28 May 2019 under the title "Shifting Powers". Media professionals from all over the world will discuss with decision-makers and disseminators from politics and civil society, culture and education, business and science. The focus will be on the question of how the work, significance and networking of the media are changing against the backdrop of global power shifts. More than two thousand participants from around 140 countries are expected to attend. As in previous years, the City of Bonn will also contribute to the content of the conference programme.

17 to 18 June: Bonn Climate Change Conference

The annual meeting of the subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is again expected to bring some 3,000 delegates to Bonn in 2019. The conference serves to prepare the 25th Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention in Chile (COP25). Mayor Ashok Sridharan, also in his role as President of the international network of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, is expected to speak at various agenda items of the conference. In cooperation with ICLEI, there will also be a thematic forum addressing the effects of climate change in cities as predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

26 to 28 June: ICLEI Resilient Cities 2019

For the tenth time already, the international city network ICLEI is organizing its "Resilient Cities" conference in Bonn. Once again, several hundred experts from local authorities, science, business and civil society are expected in Bonn. The focus of the leading international conference on urban resilience and climate adaptation will be on topics such as early warning and disaster management, digitalization, nature-based solutions, circular economy, data-based services, social innovation and inclusion.

The conference is co-patronized by Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director of the United Nations Settlements Programme, Mami Mizutori, Head of the UN Programme for Early Warning of Disasters, and Mayor Ashok Sridharan.

At the invitation of the Mayor of Bonn and President of ICLEI, a meeting of the ICLEI Global Executive Committee will also take place for the first time during the Resilient Cities Conference 2019 in Bonn. It is also planned to invite the members of the Global Task Force of Cities and Regions to Bonn.

26 to 30 August: UNSSC Summer Academy

The Summer Academy of the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC), which will take place in Bonn for the fourth time in 2019, is also an integral part of the international conference calendar in Bonn. The five-day programme is aimed not only at employees of the United Nations, but also at representatives from science and industry.

24 to 27 October: IPC General Assembly

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2019 and the 20th anniversary of its establishment in Bonn. On this occasion, the IPC General Assembly and Board Meeting will take place in Bonn from 24 to 27 October 2019. Around 400 participants from all over the world are expected to attend, including high-ranking representatives of the IPC member associations and the associated international federations. The General Assembly of the IPC takes place every two years and has the function of a general meeting.

Global Landscapes Forum and more…

For the third time, the Global Landscapes Forum will take place in Bonn at the end of the year. Last year more than a thousand representatives of governments, national and international non-governmental organizations, indigenous groups, as well as representatives from the economic, financial, youth, social and media sectors took part in the world's largest forum for integrated land use. Around 12,000 interested parties followed the conference live.

The dates for the Bonn Symposium of the Development and Peace Foundation (SEF) as well as for the UN simulation conference BIMUN/SINUB, both of which will again be held in Bonn in 2019, have also not yet been specified.
